After beating Villa in the League at the weekend, Saints made several changes to give some players some much needed game time. Rodriguez in particular had a point to prove, as did his partner in the Saints attack, Guly Do Prado. Stephen Bywater in the Wednesday goal was far the busier of the two goalkeepers and it was no surprise when Rodriguez picked up a pass from Richard Chaplow and turned his marker before striking the ball past Bywater for his first goal for Saints.

That spurred Do Prado on and he was only denied a second for Saints by the woodwork when his header hit a post.

Wednesday started the second half with a bit more urgency and Pecnik came close with an early volley from outside the box, but he could not get the better of Paolo Gazzaniga, who was looking a bit more comfortable than he did on Saturday.

Twelve minutes from time SteveDe Ridder went down inside the box, with Mattock climbing all over him and referee Mark Halsey had no hesitation in giving the penalty. With no Rickie Lambert on the field, Jay Rodriguez stepped up to the plate and although Bywater got to the ball, it somehow squirmed under him and into the net. That was effectively that and Saints had little difficulty in closing the game out.

Assistant manager Andy Crosby was given the task of talking to the press afterwards and said :

"Jay Rodriguez .... has taken his opportunity. We know he is most comfortable in a central role but he has good competition in front of him at the moment.

"Whenever you get an opportunity, you've got to take it and he did that. Whenever he is needed, we know he is more than ready.

"We controlled long periods of that game. At half-time the main thing was could we improve our quality in the final third. It was a great night's work."
